Wai Ora

The outdoor physical activities Rory participates in improve health and well-being but also focus on waiora, the spiritual connection between hauora and the environment. This is felt deeply by Sean and I and we have tried to instil it in Sam, Rory and Colt. Last weekend ParaFed organised a session with the Taranaki Outrigger Canoe Waka Ama Club at Ngamotu Beach. The club members joined two waka together to improve stability and joined the participants to paddle offshore. It was very enjoyable out on the water, connecting with the moana and paddling in unison. Rory also enjoyed a follow-up coffee making lesson with Rachel from Sunny’s coffee cart. Repetition serves to reinforce what he has learnt.
The medical appointments continue on a cycle. Rory has seen Neurologist Dr Neil, and attended a remote appointment with SCIP Audiologist Aretha to check his cochlear implants are functioning correctly.
For three months I have been working with ACC to complete a Support Needs Assessment for Rory. They occur every two years. It took me eight hours to review and provide feedback on the 54 page report and we have met with ACC recovery support worker Becka to discuss the likely changes.
