In the wet

12th birthday Colt Dec 2022

The weather is a major consideration when you head into the wild, particularly with children.  Over the years I have learnt how to read the weather better than Jim Hickey.  Some days I make multiple visits to the Metservice and YR weather websites to read the maps and predict the best locations for our adventures.  We have discovered wet weather also makes life challenging for those with disabilities (and their Support Carers).  In Rory’s case he cannot get his cochlear implants wet so needs his head covered.  This restricts his field of vision which further impairs his ability to balance and mobilise.  The ground becomes slippery so he is at heightened risk of a fall.  It is harder for him to control the walker and the handles become difficult to grip.  As a result Rory tires more quickly from the effort.  We have to provide a greater level of support for safety and we often get very wet and slip and trip ourselves on occasion.  We have had fairly continuous rain for several days.  In spite of this we headed to Pukekura Park this morning for the Parafed Taranaki Christmas amazing race.  With enjoyed following the clues around the park with several other families.

One week to go until Christmas but things are still pretty busy.  Sean took Rory to a Renal appointment.  The doctors can’t guarantee the future but for now Rory’s kidney function is ok.  Rory has his final session with Psychologist Andy who is heading to Australia.  I had a debrief with Andy and he has recommended additional sessions with a new male psychologist.  The main issue for Rory is loneliness and the need for connection.  We discussed how he might meet someone genuine, safely.  Rory and Deanne had a visit at the gym from ACC Physio Josh and were rained off from volunteering at the Junction for about the third Friday in a row.  The builder, plumber and gib stopper have completed work on the bathroom and we have had non-slip matt laid on the outdoor ramps to prevent falls and stop Rory’s feet getting burnt in summer.  I had another phone call with case worker Jes from ACC.

Colt has completed his final day of school for the year as a Year 7 at Inglewood Primary.  Tomorrow is his 12th birthday.  He had a sleepover with his friends Matthew, Arana and Reid Friday night.  They played laser tag, climbed Paritutu rock, went for a swim, battled each other in Fornite and ate plenty of pizza, waffles and pancakes with the works.  Happy birthday Colt.  You bring something special to our lives.  We love you today, tomorrow and always xox
