Father's Day without Poppa
This year was our first Father’s Day without my dad. Nana asked us to gather for a family lunch, like we always do, to celebrate Poppa, Sean and Guy. She placed Poppa’s photo in the chair at the head of the table but we didn’t talk about him. I think our minds were subconsciously avoiding it, like we didn’t want to acknowledge the big hole he has left. I think it was too soon since his passing. It is still very raw and painful. This morning dad’s big sister Ollie passed away aged 94. Our hearts go out to our cousins as they experience the grief of losing their lovely mum.
Today was Colt’s last football game of the season. His team made it to the quarter finals of the Taranaki U15 knock out cup but were sorely beaten by the top team. Rory has been complaining on the sideline that he’s endured way too much football as a spectator over the years for Sam and Colt. Taranaki weather in winter is a mixed bag. The rain poncho is proving an effective way to keep Rory dry and protect him from the wind and cold.
Rory’s sore back persists. We are trying Ibuprofen. It continues to be hard for him to get in/out of the car and shower. He and Peter made a lovely wooden footstool at NP Men’s Shed so he can elevate his feet to put on his shoes.
This morning Sean, Rory and Colt went to a suit and shirt fitting for Sam and Caitlyn’s wedding in October. It was well outside the comfort zone for lads who are used to shorts and merino in the outdoors!
