Barista in the house
For 14 years Rory has been moving through life with cancer and its legacy. It has significantly altered what he could achieve and who he could become. On the journey we have been fortunate to meet special people who are willing to give Rory a chance. They treat Rory as the person he is, looking past his impairments. They make adjustments so he has opportunities and can achieve success. This month Rachel at Sunny Coffee Caravan in New Plymouth has bought joy, challenge and achievement to Rory’s world https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/350188934/taranaki-woman-left-grind-healthcare-behind-start-coffee-cart Rory loves a mocha at morning smoko. He has tried out many of the cafés in our district. He was super keen to learn how to make them himself. I tried to find a suitable Barista course and approached several businesses about the potential to provide a small number of paid lessons. I was not able to find someone who would go out of their way until Rachel. Rory has had four coffee making lessons. He bought a simple coffee machine and is now making mocha at home. Sean (flat white) and Colt (hot chocolate) are benefiting from this new skill. Thank you Rachel for the gift you have given Rory. Apart from the coffee lessons things have been reasonably routine for Rory for the last three weeks. I took some time off work and Rory and I went to ACC to meet his new Recovery Partner Becka. We discussed the support Rory currently receives and what is ahead. Rory will need a needs assessment (2-yearly) before Christmas. This will provide an opportunity to look at how to address his back pain which unfortunately is affecting his ability to bend and do things like tie his shoes, dry himself after a shower and pick things up off the floor. He now needs one of us to assist.
